Beneath the Surface pairs two unlikely guides, Mishka, a Bermudan musician whose career has been shaped by the ocean’s rhythms, and Dr. Mikki of Ocean First Institute, a marine scientist working on youth education and ocean conservation. The film moves between intimate conversations and field work, contrasting personal responsibility with the scale of oceanic change. Each of their stories focuses on personal agency and asking bigger questions about what can be done. The visual language is spare and tactile, grounded in texture, water, and breath. The score is a mix of Mishka's own music and atmospheric sound of being on or in the ocean. By the end, the viewer is left with inspiration with a sense of hope for humanity in the face of so many poor decisions. The film is built for screenings at conservation centers as much as festivals.
